Whitecaps’ playing style evolving, but players still need time to gel
Soccer pundit Mark Rogers joined Sportsnet 650’s On Point to recap the Whitecaps’ draw against the LA Galaxy on the weekend, and how Vancouver’s playing style has changed with the addition of Felipe.
Rogers argues that Vancouver now has players that can do serious damage when in possession, not just in transition. But they will need time to build chemistry.

Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard playing together for Liverpool is the best thing we’ve seen this weekend
We’ve seriously missed watching Xabi Alonso.
The King of Cool turned out for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in a trophy-laden career before retiring last season and it was great to see him back in action this afternoon as Liverpool took on Bayern in a star-studded Legends clash at Anfield.
The likes of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Ian Rush, Steven Gerrard, Ze Roberto, Lothar Matthaus and Bixente Lizarazu took part in the match, which ended up being a ten-goal thriller.
An incredible match comes to an end!

And Alonso was undoubtedly one of the stars of the show, turning out for Liverpool in the first-half before switching to Bayern in the second.
In the opening 45 minutes, the Spaniard – playing alongside Gerrard in midfield, which definitely stirred my nostalgic side – was part of a Reds side that raced into a three-goal lead, with Fowler, Owen and Dirk Kuyt on target.
So much love for @XabiAlonso at Anfield #LFCFCBLegends pic.twitter.com/FA21wlHIiC

But Bayern fought back.
Italy’s World Cup-winning striker Luca Toni headed home a wonderful Ze Roberto cross, before Alexander Zickler and Paolo Sergio helped produce an Istanbul-esque comeback.
Alonso then uncharacteristically gave away possession inside his own box for Zickler to score his second and give Bayern the lead.

But he redeemed himself – sort of – in the second-half, switching sides and producing an all-round brilliant display before rattling home a simply breath-taking free-kick.
What a player.

International roundup: Ronaldo secures late win for Portugal
ZURICH — Cristiano Ronaldo scored with two stoppage-time headers and lifted Portugal to a stunning 2-1 win over Mohamed Salah-inspired Egypt in a friendly between World Cup-bound teams Friday.
Salah seemed to have won the game with a 56th-minute shot worthy of his fast-rising star status from the edge of the Portugal penalty area.
But one superstar was still on the field after Salah was substituted to a loud ovation in the 79th.
Ronaldo first rose unchallenged to score from Ricardo Quaresma’s left-flank cross in the second minute of time added on.

The winning goal was confirmed 90 seconds later after a video review for a possible offside.
France 2, Colombia 3SAINT-DENIS, France — France’s casual defending was exposed again as ruthless Colombia rallied from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in a World Cup warmup on Friday.
European Championship runner-up France scored twice inside 26 minutes through striker Olivier Giroud and wide midfielder Thomas Lemar. But poor concentration from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris let Colombia back in two minutes later, when Luis Muriel’s cross eluded him and went in.
Roared on by huge swathes of yellow-shirted fans at Stade de France, Colombia levelled in the 62nd when striker Radamel Falcao swept in James Rodriguez’s perfect cross from the right for his 29th international goal. A clumsy foul just inside the penalty area from Samuel Umtiti gifted Colombia a chance to win, and substitute Juan Quintero slammed the spot-kick past Lloris in the 85th.
Colombia’s fans, seemingly filling half the stadium, celebrated wildly at the final whistle. France coach Didier Deschamps, meanwhile, has plenty of thinking to do prior to Tuesday’s game away to World Cup host Russia in St. Petersburg.
It must have felt like deja vu for Deschamps. His side twice led away to World Cup winner Germany in November, only to draw 2-2.
Against a spirited and tough-tackling Colombia, France often gave the ball away too easily, particularly in midfield. Colombia caused panic with every attack, particularly down the flanks.
Early on, however, a rout looked on as slick France stretched Colombia with flowing moves.
Giroud’s 30th international goal moved him level with Jean-Pierre Papin and France great Just Fontaine, who holds the single-tournament scoring record for a World Cup with 13 goals in 1958.
Giroud got his in 70 games, Papin in 54 and Fontaine in an astonishing 21, although he played in a far more high-scoring era. Only four more players have scored more than them for France.
Germany 1, Spain 1DUESSELDORF, Germany — Germany and Spain drew 1-1 in a World Cup warm-up on Friday, underlining their status as tournament favourites with high quality performances.
Valencia forward Rodrigo Moreno got Spain off to a perfect start thanks to a perfectly weighted pass from Andres Iniesta, but Thomas Mueller set another highlight in a game of many when he equalized from distance ten minutes before the break.
Both former World Cup champions extended their world-leading unbeaten records, 2014 winner Germany stretching its run to 22 games, while the 2010 champion is now 17 games without defeat.
Germany coach Joachim Loew named arguably his strongest possible lineup with captain Sami Khedira partnering Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos in midfield.
Regular captain Manuel Neuer is still recovering from the foot injury that has kept him out since September. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen played in his place.
Spain’s Julen Lopetegui surprised many by starting Moreno in place of the more experienced Diego Costa. But Moreno has 13 league goals this season, with four in his last three appearances.
The Valencia forward needed only six minutes to open the scoring off Iniesta’s brilliant pass behind the German defence.
The impressive Isco beat Jonas Hector to the ball and sent in a low cross for David Silva before Timo Werner went close in response for Germany.
Most of the highlights were coming from Spanish players before Mueller provided one of his own with the equalizer. Receiving the ball in a central position well outside the penalty area, Mueller looked up and let fly from a standing position inside the top left corner.
Mueller then played Julian Draxler in, but Spain captain Sergio Ramos closed the door on the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. Ramos was making his 150th appearance.
David de Gea produced a brilliant save to deny Draxler after the break, ten minutes before Ter Stegen blocked Isco from point-blank and De Gea stretched to save from Ilkay Gundogan at the other end.
Mats Hummels hit the crossbar from a well-worked Kroos free kick, but chances became scarcer as substitutions took hold.
Spain’s players wore black armbands in tribute to former goalkeeper Santiago Canizares’ five-year-old son, who died earlier Friday.
Germany next plays Brazil in Berlin, while Spain hosts Argentina in Madrid on Tuesday.
Netherlands 0, England 1AMSTERDAM — Jesse Lingard scored his first international goal as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 Friday in a friendly that proved Gareth Southgate’s team can win without striker Harry Kane.
Lingard opened his England account in his ninth international, firing low into the corner past the despairing dive of Jeroen Zoet in the 59th minute after a cross from the left had rebounded to him off a Dutch defender.
It was a deserved victory for England, which looked quicker and more dangerous than the Dutch going forward, even without injured captain Kane, and solid at the back.
The match at the Amsterdam Arena was a World Cup tune-up for England, while it marked the start of a rebuilding process for new Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman, who took over the reins after the Dutch failed to qualify for the tournament in Russia.
While the Netherlands was largely impotent in front of goal, Southgate showed his squad’s strength when he was able to replace Lingard, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford midway through the second half with Dele Alli, Danny Welbeck and Jamie Vardy.
England plays Italy on Tuesday at Wembley in its last friendly before Southgate names his World Cup squad.
Argentina 2, Italy 0MANCHESTER, England — Without a slightly injured Lionel Messi, Ever Banega and Manuel Lanzini provided late goals for Argentina in a 2-0 win over Italy in a pre-World Cup friendly on Friday.
Messi was left on the bench due to a minor muscular problem, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Giovani Lo Celso getting the start instead at the centre of Argentina’s attack.
In the 75th, Banega scored from the edge of the area in between three defenders after Italy’s Jorginho gave up possession near midfield.
Ten minutes later, Lanzini blasted a shot over two defenders into the top corner, past an outstretched Gianluigi Buffon.

Until he was taken off, Angel Di Maria was Argentina’s most influential player. The PSG midfielder provided an inspired through ball for Gonzalo Higuain before the break that resulted in a difficult save from Buffon.
Italy didn’t threaten until early in the second half, when Ciro Immobile took advantage of a defensive error to roll across for Lorenzo Insigne, who blasted over the bar with only goalkeeper Willy Caballero to beat.
Insigne again came close then Caballero stopped an effort from Immobile before Argentina took control.
It was Italy’s first match since failing to qualify for the World Cup and the debut of interim coach Luigi Di Biagio.
While 20-year-olds Federico Chiesa and Patrick Cutrone made their national team debuts, much of Di Biagio’s lineup consisted of veterans held over from the qualifying campaign.
During the singing of the national anthems, each member of Italy’s squad wore the No. 13 shirt of defender Davide Astori, who was found dead in his hotel room earlier this month after a suspected cardiac arrest before Fiorentina, his club, was to play Udinese.
Italy also wore black armbands and a moment of silence was observed in Astori’s memory before kickoff.
Argentina plays next at Spain on Tuesday, while Italy visits England at Wembley Stadium in London.
Russia 0, Brazil 3MOSCOW — Brazil cruised to a 3-0 win at World Cup host Russia on Friday without the injured Neymar.
In freezing temperatures at Moscow’s vast Luzhniki arena, the Brazilians worked hard to break down Russia’s deep defence before three goals in 13 minutes early in the second half.
Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev parried Thiago Silva’s 53rd-minute shot into the path of Miranda, who scored from close range.
Philippe Coutinho made it 2-0 from the penalty spot nine minutes later, and Paulinho added Brazil’s third in the 66th with a header off Willian’s cross.
Less than three months before the World Cup opens at Luzhniki, the defeat highlighted Russia’s vulnerability at the back. Injuries to two central defenders this year forced coach Stanislav Cherchesov to field a makeshift five-man back line which was often able to do little more than stay deep and defend in numbers.
Up front, the Russians missed the injured Alexander Kokorin — who is unlikely to return for the World Cup — but still managed to create chances against a sometimes-shaky Brazilian defence.
An excellent chance went to waste late on when Anton Miranchuk hit the bar before his fellow substitute Anton Zabolotny missed an open goal on the rebound.
Alexander Samedov and Miranchuk’s brother, Alexei, both failed to score from good positions in the first half.

Impact’s Petrasso shifts focus to national team after heroics vs. TFC
Michael Petrasso just loved putting one over on Toronto FC last weekend.
The Canadian fullback made a crucial goal-line clearance late in Saturday’s game after beating TFC’s Nico Halser to the ball, helping to preserve a 1-0 win for the Montreal Impact in their MLS home opener.
A 22-year-old native of Toronto, Petrasso cut his teeth at TFC’s youth academy before moving to England in 2012 when he joined Queens Park Rangers. Now he’s back home, having signed with Montreal in January, and starting at right fullback in the Impact’s opening three games of the MLS campaign.
The highlight of his short tenure in Montreal thus far? Saving the day against TFC.
“Oh yeah. [laughs] It felt quite good, considering that I’m a Toronto boy and I came up through their academy. Playing against them was a big thing for me, and it was great because my family came out to watch me play. I wanted to win that one badly,” Petrasso told Sportsnet.
Down a goal late in the game, TFC poured on the pressure in search for an equalizer, and had the Impact pinned inside their half. Toronto midfielder Marky Delgado played a smart pass for Jozy Altidore, who fired on net from in close, only to see Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush block it. But Bush only managed to get a piece of it, and the ball continued to roll towards goal.
Petrasso was alert, though, as he outmuscled Hasler to kick the ball out of danger. Hasler had positioning on the play and looked sure to knock it in, but Petrasso did well to get there first.
“I just focused the entire game, and I think I was in the right place at the right time. … Maybe I just wanted it more than he did at the time. Maybe that’s why I got there first,” Petrasso offered.
Fresh off his heroics for the Impact, Petrasso now turns his attention to national team duty, as Canada plays New Zealand in an international friendly on Saturday in Murcia, Spain. The game marks the debut of John Herdman as coach of the men’s team, having been appointed to the position in January after being in charge of Canada’s women’s side for seven years.
Petrasso has eight caps to his credit (seven starts) since debuting for Canada in 2016. The young defender only met Herdman for the first time earlier this week when Canada’s training camp kicked off in Spain. What’s impressed Petrasso the most about Herdman is the enthusiasm he has brought to the team, and how he has challenged all of the Canadian players.
“He’s made it very clear what he wants from each of us and what his goals are, not only talking about the game on Saturday against New Zealand, but also about the long-term future,” Petrasso explained.
“John wants us to go into every game now like it’s a World Cup qualifier. We’re desperate to win and qualify for the [2022] World Cup, so we need to adapt that mentality now. …. We have four years to get ready, so every game is so important.”
Herdman has also taken the time to speak to each player on a one-on-one basis, eager to find out what motivates them to play for Canada, and to get their feedback about recent training camps, and what worked (and what didn’t work) under previous coach Octavio Zambrano.
“He’s talked to all of us individually, to find out what lengths we’ll go to for ourselves and to help Canada qualify for the World Cup,” Petrasso said.
Canada vs. New Zealand
According to FIFA’s official website, Canada’s and New Zealand’s men’s teams have met before, with the Reds earning wins over the Kiwis in a pair of friendly games in September 1980 in Vancouver and Edmonton.
New Zealand is ranked No. 120 in the current FIFA world rankings. Canada is 90th, sandwiched between Congo and Armenia. The Kiwis are the reigning champions of the Oceania region, having won the OFC Nations Cup for a fifth time in 2016.
Canada has not played a game since losing 1-0 to El Salvador in a friendly held in Houston last October. That was Zambrano’s last match in charge.

Toronto FC sign midfielder Victor Vazquez to multi-year extension
TORONTO – Victor Vazquez took little time in establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Major League Soccer when he debuted for Toronto FC in 2017.
The Spanish playmaker finished second in the league in assists (16) last season, and he led MLS with six game-winning assists. He was also named to the league’s end-of-year all-star team, known as the Best XI, and played a pivotal role in helping TFC win its first MLS Cup, including scoring in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Seattle in the final.
A product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia youth academy, Vazquez made 39 combined appearances in 2017, scoring 10 goals and tallying 20 assists in all competitions (MLS regular season, MLS Cup playoffs and Canadian Championship).
So, it hardly came as a surprise when the Reds announced Wednesday they have re-signed the influential midfielder to a multi-year contract extension.
What is a little surprising is Vazquez, 31, has committed his immediate future to MLS after previously dropping hints he was considering a return to Spain once his contract with TFC expired. Vazquez was in the second year of a three-year deal.
But the Spaniard stated Wednesday he never gave serious thought about returning to his homeland, and that there was never any doubt he would ink a new deal with TFC. In fact, it sounds like he wants to finish his playing career in Toronto.
“I’m really happy here. I want to be here for as many years as possible, even if I can maybe finish my career here. I feel like I’m at home,” Vazquez told reporters.
“I’m feeling very comfortable [in Toronto], and I hope I can maybe re-sign again in couple of years because I still have many years to play and my family is happy here – that’s the most important thing for me. I say it always, when they are happy, I am happy.”
Toronto coach Greg Vanney called the club’s decision to give Vazquez a contract extension “a no-brainer.”
“He was, for me, of the new players who came into the league last year, he was at the top of the charts. … It’s good to get him settled in and looking beyond this year, and into the future,” Vanney said.
Locking up a key starter such as Vazquez is a major coup for TFC’s front office, something it has proven to be quite skilled at in recent months, having successfully extended defenders Chris Mavinga and Drew Moor, and fullback Justin Morrow before their contracts ran out.
It’s clear that Vanney and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko are playing the long-game here. They’re not just planning for the current campaign – they’re looking ahead to two or three seasons down the road – and keeping players such as Vazquez in tow are central to their ambitious plans.
“We want to be able to look beyond just this year, and look at pieces we want to continue to build with, and continue to build around. Getting those guys solidified and looking at this place as somewhere they’re going to be for a little while is important to us,” Vaney stated.
Vazquez earned $700,000 in 2017, according to the MLS Players Association website, making him the fourth-highest paid player on TFC behind designated players Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley and Sebastian Giovinco.
For the longest time, TFC searched for a creator of Vazquez’s calibre – someone who would serve as the key midfield link who could provide quick and quality service to the forwards. When TFC signed Vazquez prior to last season, the hope was that he would put the team over the top and help lead them to glory after the club fell short in the 2016 MLS Cup final.
The Spaniard proved to be the last piece of the puzzle for TFC in 2017, playing a starring role in a historic treble campaign that saw the Reds win the MLS Cup, the Canadian Championship and the Supporters’ Shield, as well as set the record for most points (69) in a regular season.
Vazquez has won plaudits from MLS pundits and fans for his elite passing ability and vision during his brief time in the league, something teammate Marky Delgado noticed on the very first day of training camp last year.
“His positioning is great, his head’s always moving, he’s seeing everything. You could tell right away he’s a world-class player,” Delgado told Sportsnet last season. “His ability to see things before they even come up at the moment is incredible. You’ll think he’s going one way and then he’s passing it the other way.”

What do the last 20 seasons of Player of the Year tell us about Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah’s chances?
As the season draws to a close, the race for Player of the Year has become one of two magnificent horses.
Kevin De Bruyne vs Mohamed Salah.
Harry Kane’s injury has probably ruled him out of contention and while I’d like to see David Silva in the mix, the bookies reckon both the Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year will go to either Salah or City’s strawberry-blonde playmaker.
A reminder here that Jose Mourinho let both of them go while in charge of Chelsea…This contest raises an interesting debate about the individual awards.
Technically, the absolute best player of the season should win them both but in the past we’ve sometimes seen a standout player overlooked in favour of the best player for the title-winning team.
Many would argue that Salah has been the league’s best player while De Bruyne has been the best of an excellent bunch for the champions elect.
We’d enjoyed some genius moments from KDB this seasonAP:Associated PressThere’s certainly a case for De Bruyne being the league’s best player in his own right of course.
And it’s difficult to compare the two directly as they have different roles — Salah is charged more with goalscoring from an advanced position while De Bruyne creates from deep.
However, with Salah on course to breeze past the 30-goal mark and threaten Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s jointly-held record haul of 34 goals in a single Premier League campaign, the Liverpool winger will be hard to deny come April.
I never understood why the awards are presented before the end of the season but hey ho, that’s football for you.
Salah is leaving proven Premier League goalscorers in the dust in the race for the Golden BootPA:Press AssociationSo what does history suggest?
Because I’ve got nothing better to do on a Monday morning, I trawled back through the last 20 years of both individual awards, and the Golden Boot.
Worryingly for Salah, only five times has the Golden Boot winner been awarded one or both of the Player of the Year awards since 1997/98.
Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez picked up all three gongs.
While Henry was forced to settle for just the FWA Footballer of the Year despite his 27 goals in 2005/06, with Steven Gerrard’s peers naming him the league’s best that season.
Harry Kane has won back-to-back Golden Boots but is yet to win either Player of the Year awardPA:Press AssociationPerhaps, those that vote for the awards believe that the Golden Boot is reward enough for scoring the most goals and so they see the dual Player of the Year awards as vehicles to recognise the league’s other top talent.
If this is true then things look good for De Bruyne, although there are echoes of Van Persie’s effort at Arsenal in 2011/12 and Suarez’s 2013/14 season about Salah’s display this campaign, both of which saw them add the individual awards to their respective mantelpieces.
Salah is on course to better Suarez’s 31-goal league tally of 2013/14PA:Empics SportHow often do one or both of the individual awards go to a title-winner?
In the last 20 years, the Players’ Player of the Year has been won by 11 players representing the eventual champions.
The FWA are slightly more in favour of crediting a title-winning player, with 12 their winners also lifting the league trophy in the same season.
Initially, this once again appears good news for De Bruyne with Man City coasting to a potentially record-breaking title win.
Will City ease up and focus on the Champions League or push for the record?Getty Images - GettyHowever, more recent history actually favours non-title winners for the individual awards.
Following Ronaldo’s clean sweep in 2007/08, the Players’ Player of the Year went to a non-title winner five times out of the next six seasons.
And the FWA failed to crown a title-winning Footballer of the Year for six consecutive years between 2009 – 2014.
Remember when Scott Parker won the FWA Footballer of the Year in 2011? Good times…Action Images - ReutersAdmittedly, the last three years have bucked that trend with Eden Hazard (2014/15) and N’Golo Kante (2016/17) picking up both individual awards in Chelsea’s two most recent league successes.
Riyad Mahrez (Player’s Player of the Year) and Jamie Vardy (FWA Footballer of the Year) split the awards that near-mythical season Leicester did the impossible.
So while the last three seasons would suggest De Bruyne is the favourite for this year’s prizes, the post-Ronaldo era as a whole leans more to Salah’s side.
We still think Kante should have won at least one of the awards the season Leicester lifted the trophyGetty Images - GettyIf City do win the league with a record total of points, and Salah equals or breaks the record for most goals in a Premier League season, then the Player of the Year contest will be a real humdinger.
At this stage I’d be tempted to say give one to each of them but history is less indecisive.
14 out of the last 20 seasons have resulted in one player winning both the awards.
How about a good old-fashioned flip of the coin?

Mohamed Salah recreates Lionel Messi’s famous humiliation of Jerome Boateng after three minutes against Watford
Remember when Lionel Messi turned Jerone Boateng into a meme?
The Barcelona No10’s quick feet caused Bayern’s centre-back to lose his sense of balance at the Nou Camp in 2015 to the amusement of fans everywhere.
Well, now Miguel Britos knows about how Boateng felt at the time.
Sat. Down.Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool against Watford after just three minutes with superb footwork in the box reminiscent of Messi’s famous goal.
Just like Boateng, Britos was left in a heap as he tried to keep track of the Egyptian winger’s feet and was forced to watch the ball nestle in the net while chewing on the Anfield turf.
Granted, Britos is no Boateng, but there’s no denying the brilliance of the Reds’ top scorer.
Andy Robertson’s inviting cross just before half-time allowed Salah to double the lead and extend his lead in the race for the Golden Boot to two goals — Harry Kane (24), Salah (26).
The ex-Roma winger has now scored 34 goals in competitions this season, beating the best debut campaign in terms of goals for Liverpool previously held by Fernando Torres.
His haul betters that of Luis Suarez’s best season for the club and he’s just become the third player in Anfield history to score 25+ league goals.
