Queiroz: Messi should be banned until FIFA proves he is human!
Lionel Messi is so good he should be banned until it can be proved he is human, Iran boss Carlos Queiroz has joked. The Argentina star, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, has been in sensational form once more this season during Barcelona's hunt for a second treble in four seasons. Messi also scored a hat-trick in his country's final World Cup qualifier over Ecuador, sealing a 3-1 victory that secured their place at the finals in Russia this year. Queiroz's side came close to a famous 0-0 draw with Argentina at the last World Cup in Brazil, only for Messi to score an injury-time winner in Belo Horizonte. The 64-year-old believes that moment underlined the genius of the diminutive forward. "I've always said that Messi is an extraordinary player," he told FIFA.com. "He's out of this world. If he were human, he wouldn't have had that magical moment in that match. "I don't usually like losing, but I didn't come away from that defeat with a negative feeling. It's when something magical like that happens that you know that football is alive and kicking, and that's why it's one of the best sports in the world to watch. "And it's even more of a special moment when it comes from a player who shouldn't be allowed to play by FIFA until it's proven that he's actually human!" 36 - Lionel Messi has now scored against more different teams than any other player in La Liga history, surpassing Raul Gonzalez and Aritz Aduriz (35). Genie. pic.twitter.com/zjEPCuHAVU — OptaJose (@OptaJose) February 24, 2018 Queiroz faces another daunting prospect at the finals this year, with Iran drawn in the same group as 2010 winners Spain, European champions Portugal and Morocco. The former Manchester United assistant and Real Madrid and Portugal coach is expecting another memorable occasion when his side meet Cristiano Ronaldo. "It's going to be special, as it always is when you take on great players. In this case, it's the best player in the world," he said.  "But when the match starts there are just two teams who are trying to win. Football will decide who wins the day and who was better on the field of play. "The memories stay with you, of course they do, especially in shared projects, like we had at Manchester and the Portuguese national team. That was a long time ago, though. "Times have changed and now I've got other Ronaldos with me. They're important players… the likes of [Alireza] Jahanbakhsh, [Reza] Ghoochannejad, [Ali] Karimi. These are the Ronaldos I've got to look after now and who I've got to pay attention to achieve the success we all want."

Serge Aurier’s embarrassing throw-ins send Spurs fans into meltdown

Dream Team FC
Serge Aurier’s embarrassing throw-ins send Spurs fans into meltdown

It is one of the most basic skills in football.

And something you would expect a professional Premier League footballer never to give away a foul for.

Yep, the humble throw-in.

Let someone else take it SergeReuters

But unfortunately for Spurs and all their fans watching the Crystal Palace game it is not a skill Serge Aurier has yet mastered.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side struggled to break down the Eagles’ defence with Harry Kane missing a golden opportunity and two penalty appeals turned down.

Don’t worry he got his customary goal with a late header to give Spurs all three points.

Spurs fans were left frustrated for most of the game with Palace’s defence standing firm but nothing will have p***** them off more than Aurier’s performance.

Not bad with his feet but awful with his handsPA:Press Association

The Ivorian cannot take throw-ins.

I mean he tries, but he either doesn’t know how to take proper throw-ins or he just has terrible technique.

Aurier threw three foul throws during the game at Selhurst Park which must be some sort of Premier League record – but I don’t think they keep count of these things as no-one ever thought it would happen.

It’s easy, feet planted and launch itGetty Images - Getty

It reminds us of those under-9 games where all sorts of techniques are displayed as they launch the ball from the touchline.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Pochettino is calling Rory Delap to come in for some specialist training during the week.

Not only did Aurier pick up a hat-trick of foul throws but it also meant that he relieved the pressure on Palace three times when Spurs had good positions.

Pretty awful by anyone’s standards and the Spurs fans couldn’t help but laugh on social media at how bad it was.

Serge Aurier, an experienced full-back, still can't throw a ball… 😂😂 #CRYTOT

Rooney: Moving to China for the money would have been easy
Wayne Rooney believes moving to the Chinese Super League (CSL) would have seen him lose the motivation to play football, despite the huge pay packets on offer. Rooney, England's record goalscorer, was strongly linked with a switch to the CSL when he fell out of favour at Manchester United. But the 32-year-old instead opted for a return to boyhood club Everton, ending a 13-year spell at Old Trafford, where he became the club's all-time leading goalscorer and won five Premier League titles, as well as the 2007-08 Champions League. Rooney has signalled he would be keen to manage Everton when he hangs up his boots and the former England captain does not regret turning down a move to China. "In the summer when I was leaving Manchester United it would have been quite easy for me to go abroad," Rooney told BBC Sport. "Go to China, go somewhere else and pick up a lot of money and see out the last few years of my career earning a lot of money. "That's just not me. I need those goals, I need that pressure. That desire to play would have been lost if I'd chosen that other option." Rooney is Everton's top scorer in the league this season, hitting 10 goals and providing two assists to help Sam Allardyce's men sit ninth in the table.

Roma wanted Giroud as Dzeko replacement, Monchi confirms
Olivier Giroud was top of Roma's list of transfer targets had Chelsea met the asking price for Edin Dzeko, according to the Serie A club's sporting director Monchi. Although the Premier League champions signed defender Emerson Palmieri from the Giallorossi, Roma rejected offers for striker Dzeko. Giroud eventually moved from Arsenal to Stamford Bridge as part of a deadline day transfer triangle that saw Michy Batshuayi head to Borussia Dortmund on loan as a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who became the Gunners' record signing. And Monchi confirmed Roma had Giroud in their sights if Chelsea had met the asking price for former Manchester City striker Dzeko. "We would have signed another important player, perhaps Giroud, because otherwise the fans would have been really unhappy," Monchi told Sky Italia. "The English club [Chelsea] never met our financial demands so the deal was never closed. "No club are happy to sell their best players, but if a good offer arrives, it's important to evaluate it." Giroud, yet to score for Chelsea, has described joining Antonio Conte's side as the "obvious" choice, with Dortmund and Sevilla having also been keen on the France international.

Mohamed Salah’s unique ‘juggle goal’ is all you need this Valentine’s Day evening

Well that was fun.

Reactions, skill, composure, cheek, flair… pure showmanship from one of world football’s great entertainers of the last year.

This piece of brilliance was the Egyptian’s 30th goal of the season in all competitions — and it’s mid-February.

A decent away day you would sayAP:Associated Press

The star of the show was Sadio Mane.

Liverpool’s Senegalese winger bagged a hat-trick as his link-up play with Salah and Roberto Firmino proved too much for Porto’s defenders to handle.

Jose Sa didn’t have the best night between the sticks for the hosts.

Cameras caught substitute Iker Casillas looking desperately glum when Mane’s shot after 25 minutes wriggled under Sa’s body to break the deadlock.

From then on the floodgates opened.

Salah’s goal came four minutes later and Mane poached his second soon after half-time when Sa failed to palm a Firmino effort into safe territory.

The Brazilian then got in on the act, capping off an incisive breakaway.

Former Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria revealed he would have no problem playing for their LaLiga rivals Barcelona. Di Maria spent four seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, winning a LaLiga crown and Champions League title among numerous other trophies. The Argentina international spent a campaign at Manchester United before arriving at his current club Paris Saint-Germain in 2015. Despite his history at Madrid, Di Maria, 29, said he would play for Barca if the opportunity presented itself. "My relationship with Madrid is finished because my cycle there ended," he told So Foot. "Frankly, I wouldn't have a problem to play at Barca, to the contrary. "The only club I couldn't play for is Newell's Old Boys because I am a fan of Rosario Central." Deportivo loses in new coach Clarence Seedorf’s debut

MADRID — Former Netherlands midfielder Clarence Seedorf made a losing start to his latest coaching role when Deportivo La Coruna was beaten 1-0 by Real Betis on Monday.

Deportivo, which has now gone eight matches without a win, dropped further into the relegation zone.

Seedorf wasn’t able to bring much of an improvement and his team was jeered off at the end by the home crowd.

"It’s normal. The players have to be able to accept the criticism," Seedorf said. "We have to look at the things that we did well. We were well organized and showed our competitiveness.

"It was a difficult match against a team that plays very well. Everybody is disappointed with the result but we are convinced that things have changed."

It was Deportivo’s sixth loss in eight games, leaving the club second from bottom in the standings with 17 points from 23 matches, three points from safety.

"I think we showed something different today," Deportivo defender Raul Albentosa said. "We created more chances than we did in the last three matches together. We had our opportunities but we couldn’t capitalize on them. We just have to keep working hard."

Betis went up to eighth place after Loren Moron scored the only goal with a close-range shot following a low cross by Junior Firpo in the 54th minute.

"It’s difficult to evaluate Seedorf after a game against a team like ours, which already has very clear ideas and concepts," Betis coach Quique Setien said. "We played a very complete game."

Seedorf, who was previously in charge of AC Milan in 2014 and a second-division club in China in 2016, replaced Cristobal Parralo at Deportivo.

Deportivo’s next match is at Alaves on Saturday while Betis hosts defending champion Real Madrid on Sunday.

Barcelona has a seven-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top. Valencia is third, 16 points off the lead and one in front of Real Madrid.

Barcelona 0 Getafe 0: Messi, Suarez frustrated to offer Atletico title boost
Barcelona were held to a second consecutive draw as Getafe left Camp Nou with a hard-earned 0-0 draw. For the first time since the April 2012 Clasico against Real Madrid, Barca failed to register a shot on target during the first half of a home game in LaLiga, although Luis Suarez did have a brilliant volley ruled out for offside. Ernesto Valverde's side belatedly shifted through the gears after half-time but it was not enough to breach some stubborn resistance from Pepe Bordalas' visitors. It means Atletico Madrid, who picked up a third consecutive victory at Malaga on Saturday, have trimmed Barcelona's advantage at the summit to seven points. If Diego Simeone's men can make further inroads before the teams meet at Camp Nou on March 4, LaLiga might just have a title race as opposed to a procession this season. 90: Chance for @LuisSuarez9!! Great save from Guaita! #ForçaBarça #BarçaGetafe pic.twitter.com/YFjXPOAnbY — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) February 11, 2018 Yerry Mina was handed a full debut at the heart of a makeshift Barcelona defence, with full-back Lucas Digne partnering the Colombia international at centre-half. It was a factor in a stuttering start from LaLiga's leaders, although Mina's playmaking capabilities from deep appeared attuned to Barca's famed style. Damian Suarez made a perfectly judged challenge to deny Lionel Messi when Ivan Rakitic's chipped pass found Barcelona's talisman in the 32nd minute. Getafe continued to threaten when they could at the other end and Angel Rodriguez latched on to a clever ball behind Rakitic from Francisco Portillo, twisted into space past Mina and had a strike deflected narrowly wide from the edge of the box. Luis Suarez had twice been frustrated by the linesman's flag by the time a correct offside call meant his fabulous 44th-minute volley on the end of Messi's floated free-kick was chalked off, leaving the Uruguay star furious. 0 - Barcelona failed to have a shot on target in a La Liga home game in the first half for the first time since April 21st 2012 vs Real Madrid. Blank. pic.twitter.com/viSDJ61aN6 — OptaJose (@OptaJose) February 11, 2018 Philippe Coutinho finally managed to give Vicente Guaita some work in the 50th minute, although his well-struck, curling effort was too close to the Getafe goalkeeper. The flag stayed down in the 56th minute but there was further anguish for Luis Suarez on the end of Paco Alcacer's clever flick when he slammed wide. Guaita thrust out a left hand to keep out a more testing Coutinho attempt but Getafe's response to Barcelona's most enterprising spell of the match was impressive. Gaku Shibasaki might have caught out Marc-Andre ter Stegen but lifted his shot off target when a counter-attack found the Barca goalkeeper in no-man's land, while Vitorino Antunes flashed an ambitious volley over from a 62nd-minute corner. Valverde responded by sending on Andres Iniesta and Ousmane Dembele in place of Coutinho and Alcacer. Messi won a free-kick and sent the shot spiralling over – the fear for Getafe was that Bruno Gonzalez catching him in the face with a stray boot while he was on the floor might have made the great man angry. But Guaita was able to stand up to a pair of testing Messi strikes and produce an acrobatic stoppage-time save to keep out a Luis Suarez header as Getafe held on for a deserved point.
