Jack Rodwell has gone on trial at Chelsea’s unofficial reserve side

A cursory glance at Vitesse Arnhem’s squad shows no fewer than four Chelsea loanees.

Fankaty Dabo, Matt Miazga, Charlie Colkett and Masoun Mount are the four chosen ones this season.

Last season Nathan, Lewis Baker and Mukhtar Ali all arrived from Chelsea while the campaign before Izzy Brown, Danilo Pantic and Diminic Solanke made the GelreDome their home.

So when a footballer headed from England to Vitesse you’d have been forgiven for thinking it was another Chelsea loanee.

Not so.

Jack Rodwell has joined Vitesse on trial as Sunderland continue to try and get his £70,000-a-week wages off their budget.

Rodwell has made just one start for Sunderland this season with a further appearance coming off the bench.

It’s a far cry from the teenager who was playing for Everton at 16.

Rodwell has three England caps to his name but has struggled for first-team football ever since leaving Everton for Man City in 2012.

Vitesse are currently seventh in the Eredivisie, having finished fifth in the table last season.

Bertrand Traore, Wilfried Bony and Nemanja Matic have all benefited from spells at Vitesse, so maybe it’s exactly what the 26-year-old needs.

It’s never too late to gatecrash England’s 2018 World Cup party.
