Here’s why Romelu Lukaku isn’t actually Belgium’s all-time top scorer just yet

It looks like Romelu Lukaku will have to wait a little longer to become Belgium’s all-time top goal scorer.

The forward netted twice in their 3-3 draw with Mexico on Friday, before scoring the only goal in Tuesday’s victory at home to Japan.

And with that goal, it looked like the 24-year-old had hit his 31st goal for his country, surpassing the record of 30-goals held by Bernard Voorhoof and Paul van Himst.

Not bad for someone who’s still only 24, right?

However, those bundles of fun over at FIFA claim Lukaku is still three goals short of the 31-goal mark.

According to reports, Lukaku is officially only on 28 goals, after FIFA nullified an international friendly between Belgium and Luxembourg back in 2014, in which he scored a hat trick.

Looking back, it seems Belgium won the pre-World Cup friendly 5-1 in Genk, but FIFA wiped the result from official records after they made seven substitutions – one more than the permitted six.

It also means Adnan Januzaj’s (remember him?) debut for Belgium was not officially recognised by FIFA.

Don’t worry, Lukaku fans.

The Manchester United forward will have the chance to move closer to the 31-goal mark (again) when Belgium return to action in March.

Let’s just hope manager Roberto Martinez sticks to six substitutions, eh?
