There was a heartbreaking reason behind Sevilla’s emphatic comeback against Liverpool

‘It’s just a game’.

A sentence guaranteed to annoy any football fan, especially those Liverpool supporters who travelled to Sevilla just to see their team give up a three-goal lead.

But, at the risk of sounding like your mum, it really is just a game. A beautiful game, as the event of last night showed.

The turnaround in Seville was all the more poignant given news coming out of local reports in Spain.

Sevilla’s head coach Eduardo Berizzo reportedly revealed to his players that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The players were told the news at half-time, by which stage they were 3-0 down following goals from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

A Wissam Ben Yedder goal six minutes after the break sparked the comeback.

The 27-year-old then converted a penalty, following a foul by former Sevilla full-back Alberto Moreno, before midfielder Guido Pizarro levelled the scores in the 93rd minute.

Sevilla’s players notably charged towards Berizzo after the goal, which leaves them in a good position to qualify for the next round.

Berizzo, who played 13 times for Argentina during his playing career, is in his first year as Sevilla manager.

He took over in May, succeeding countryman Jorge Sampaoli, and has guided them to fifth in La Liga this season.

Get well soon, Eduardo.
